Despite the title, 10 Downing screams New York. The influences are wide-reaching, but there's nary a banger or mash to be found. Located at the corner of 6th Avenue and Downing Street (naturally), the restaurant is striving every day to live up to its hefty anticipation. The buzz ran high for the opening of the restaurant, but in the months leading up to the opening, 10 Downing went through more chefs than Spinal Tap went through drummers. With Jason Neroni (Porchetta and the Tasting Room) firmly planted in the kitchen with Katy Sparks (Compass and Quilty's), the restaurant has built up a strong identity.
It's definitely a hip spot. An impressive collection of contemporary art adorns the walls (the restaurant is curated by West Village gallery owner Tracy Williams), a giant pair of entwined antlers overlooks the dining room, and the place is so bustling that you'll need a pair of walkie talkies to communicate with your dining companion. Scattered artifacts give it a bit of an eclectic vibe, but the atmosphere is at times essentially French.
So too with the menu, which provides a contemporary twist on French bistro classics. Dishes like Duck Meatball Cassoulet, Squid Ink Agnolotti, and Bison Hanger Steak are made with contemporary local ingredients but very simple French inspired recipes. Naturally, there's an impressive wine list and an even more impressive dessert list. Either start with a traditional platter of farmstand cheeses, or opt for a rich chocolate soufflé cake served with a scoop of malt-flavored ice cream. I promise you won't be disappointed.
