    Pontiac Solstice

General Motors ended up with more than it bargained for, in many ways, since Donald Trump promoted GM’s new Pontiac Solstice on an episode off NBC’s “The Apprentice”, when the public was invited to partake in a ten-day early order plan. More than 41,000 consumers registered, and over 7,250 orders for the roadster were placed that week.

Seems like sports car fans have been waiting for a car like the Solstice, with its sexy styling, cat-like handling and low price. All the engineering and refining in an inspired sports car, bringing to the masses what could turn out to be the ultimate open-air driving experience. And we’ll wait a bit longer - until February’s delivery date, at least - for this two-seat, rear-wheel-drive roadster.

Pontiac has never built a budget-priced genuine roadster before; it wanted to produce such a car in the ‘60s, but the idea was killed off as the corporation thought the car would steal sales from the much-loved Corvette. But, in 2002, the Pontiac Solstice was conceived by Bob Lutz after he'd been hired by GM to help turn around the firm’s line of cars. What happened next was a whirlwind; GM managed to design and build the working concept sports car in less than four months, using parts already in production for existing cars and even an SUV.

It is a high point of innovative design; the roadster’s low profile and snug passenger compartment fit the roadster formula perfected decades ago by brands like Alfa Romeo, Triumph and MG. The small two-seat roadster has balance, polish and is compliant.

The interior design is equally intuitive, with details like pedals placed for quick foot placement and a cockpit-style instrument display that wrap around the driver. An integrated appearance is achieved whether the top is lowered or raised. When lowered, a body-colour inset blends perfectly between in the interior and exterior.

A 5-speed short throw gearbox allows for quick gear changes; GM said it found that a six-speed manual transmission - used by the Miata - didn't improve the Solstice's performance. Designers also worked with chassis engineers to optimize the placement of the shifter. Manual shifter throws between gear changes were studied until the “just right” length was determined. The gearshift is easy to use and helps make the roadster fun to drive.

The little roadster doesn't have the raw power of a Chrysler 300C Hemi, but the two-seater packs a big punch, exhibiting the dexterity of a large cat. Solstice packs true sports car features, like a receptive, rear-wheel drive and four-wheel independent suspension layout.

And perhaps even more important for consumers, Solstice hits the price target - hovering around $26,000 Canadian. Pontiac Solstice is available for order now, for delivery dates in February 2006. - R.B.
