Coldplay celebrates their latest album launch: After a three-month delay and much coverage in the news media, Coldplay's X & Y (Capitol) is released. It is expected to be the top-selling album this week, having already sold large quantities through advance purchases. Consider it the opening round in a summer full of high-profile new releases in rock, hip-hop, country and more.

Music experts expect that up to 500,000 copies of the Coldplay album will be sold the first week, sending it to number one. With expectations for the new album reaching unrealistic levels, the English quartet come close to meeting those prospects with a dense U2-esque collection of stadium rockers augmented with Coldplay's trademark moments of hushed intensity.

X & Y is said to be crucial to the struggling EMI Group's financial resuscitation, and edgy executives tried effortlessly to rush the release of the album. Coldplay took six weeks to make its 2000 debut, ''Parachutes," and six months on 2002's ''A Rush of Blood to the Head." But it took 18 months to complete ''X & Y," a marathon that involved scrapping a half a year of work. But for third album X & Y, Coldplay has moulded its sound in new and familiar ways, helping separate the band from other Brit-pop fads and making them long-term players on the rock 'n' roll timeline.

The thirteen songs are typical of Coldplay’s style. Chris Martin’s lyrics evoke pathos, conveying real emotions and subjects in the manner with which he has made his own. The Comparisons to U2 are more literal than one might expect.

"In mathematics X and Y were always the answers, but in life no one knows," Martin says. "To me the album is about those unanswerable questions, and what you should do about the fact that you can't explain all the unknown variables."

Meanwhile, Martin might owe the composers of an ABC TV show's theme song some royalties due to similarities between the theme and one of his songs. Martin may be a fan of Brit soap Night and Day because his new song Speed of Sound sounds very much like the beginning of the TV theme. - A.J.
