    Carolina Herrera

If you reside in an oft-overcast area like the UK or the Pacific Northwest, you can get away with one decent pair of solar spectacles. However, if you live in Venezuela, you need an array of sun-taunting eyewear. New York-via-Venezuela designer Carolina Herrera understands the need for a range of sunglass looks. Her collections thread together a variety of aesthetics, from the brazenly chic to the subtly refined, cultivating cohesion through a universal emphasis on refined playfulness. From Herrera you can expect uniqueness, innovation, and carefully attended-to minutiae, including stylishly ergonomic frames and detailed arm designs.-S.T.

    Hugo Boss

You know what they say about Hugo…when it comes to sunglasses, that man is the boss. Ok, so that was a terrible play on words and I apologize. I just couldn’t resist. That said, the sentiment is still true. Hugo Boss knows how to craft a pretty damn stylish pair of shades. Coming out of Italy (aka the most fashionable damn place in the world. Sorry Paris), these beauties capitalize on the contemporary tend of tinted and coloured over-sized frames straight out of the 1970s. But this isn’t simply a case of what’s old becoming new. While a few of the 2008 line-up may look like prop department rejects from Boogie Nights, most of these glasses boast a sleek oval design that could only come out of a post millennial fashion world. These are the type of glasses you’ll see strapped to Lindsay Lohan’s face during her inevitable trips to court and rehab this year, the perfect size to cover up the scarred eyes of a party girl who has gone days without succumbing to the sweet pleasures of sleep. If Hugo Boss puts out glasses any bigger next year, there’s a good chance that the company will be the first to ever create the sunglass facemask. The next fashion sunglass trend will have to be ultra small glasses to inverse the current style. Personally, I’m pushing for sunglass-contact lenses and a whole generation of young people with blacked out eyeballs. How great would that be?-P.B.

    Jimmy Choo Sunglasses 2008

The just-launched line of Jimmy Choo sunglasses will no doubt have instant devotees. As much as I hate to admit it, the hype surrounding the Sex and the City movie coming out at the end of the month will inspire a rush to purchase the most expensive of shoes and accessories. Jimmy Choo is an obvious line whose profile has risen because of the show, and possibly it alone. The majority of their new line (just like their footwear) is uninspired; typical aviators are no different from any others apart from the JC logo. The Jerry frames are the most interesting, being a mix between the oversized Gucci shades of years past with the squareness of Wayfarers; while the (plain) Jane is sure to be a favourite for ladies who lunch for its large, square, acetate frames in beige. They will be scooped up, to be sure, but will they look different from anything else out there? Definitely not.-C.S.
