Parfumerie Generale
By Phil Brown
hen you think of fragrance makers, the image that normally comes to mind is that of a prissy artiste in France mixing and matching fragrances to come up with something that can only be described as “tres magnific.” The image that you wouldn’t normally think of is an industrial chemist who experiments with chemically based cologne during his time off from making some serious chemicals. However, that man exists. His name is Pierre Guillaume and he is responsible for creating the delightful industrial-strength cologne Parfumerie Generale.
Guillaume didn’t attend any of the prestigious European perfumery schools (Yes, they’re out there. The world is that strange). He merely started playing around in the lab with raw materials during his off time and came up with some very potent and pleasant fragrances. Using a process he developed for aerospace chemistry called photo-affinage, Guillaume blasts raw materials like rose, patchouli, or vetiver with UV light, which breaks the material down to its essence before reviving it with alcohol. It’s all very complicated and scientific, but the results are a magical treat for the nose.
Because these fragrances are created in such a new and unique way, they smell unlike anything else on the market. Slap some of this stuff on your neck and watch all the noses around you perk up with delight. Pierre Guillaume is very controlling over his products and has a hand in ever stage of development including overseeing the design of the bottles. As a result, this stuff even looks different than everything else on the shelf. So if you’re one of those people who has to seem different and stand out from the masses, then this is the only cologne that you should consider…well, at least until it becomes trendy and/or popular anyways. Then you’ll have to find something else.
