Don’t get me wrong, the Mini has always been a cute little car, but when it came to storage, it wasn’t very practical. After throwing in a few bags of groceries, you’d be hard pressed to find any room for your golf clubs. Thankfully, BMW has unveiled a new Mini that lets you have your Brit-looking car in all its retro splendour, without having to sacrifice space.

The Mini Clubman is a station wagon-esque version of the classic Cooper, and ensures there’s plenty of room for cargo and extra passengers. Slightly longer than the classic Mini (by about 9.5 inches), this revamp manages to stay (relatively) true to the classic design of previous models. New additions include a suicide-door for passengers in the back, as well as a backdoors that open like a barn door instead of a hatchback. BMW states this was done to offer the biggest opening possible so that the larger trunk could truly be put to good use. While some critics say the doors are a bit cumbersome to use and also lament the fact that it creates a column down the back that slightly obstructs vision, but the cool-factor they possess will surely attract many buyers.

The Clubman comes in two different versions: the Cooper S, which packs in 145 horsepower, while the standard Cooper model delivers 120 horsepower. Inside, the car features an almost cartoon-like speedometer that hangs predominantly in the centre of the dashboard like a clock from Flava Flav’s neck. The whole interior is a bit kitschy, but if you’re driving a Mini in the first place, you’re probably fine with a little bit of ironic cheekiness. Fans of the original Mini will love the rear door surround, which has been painted to match the roof, in the same style that the originals were. And with 30 possible colour combos available, personalization is encouraged in creating a Mini Clubman that’s entirely your own.

The car is already on sale in the U.S. and will be hitting Canadian car lots in the first quarter of 2008. Detailed specs and pricing will be made available closer to market launch, so prepare to grab your clubs and jump in (you don’t have to worry about maneuvering yourself like a gymnast anymore.)
