 e are entering the second phase of our beautiful relationship with Bing Bang Jewelry. Masterminded by designers Anna Sheffield and her brother Kevin Kearney, Bing Bang has continuously caught the attention of several upper echelon fashion designers. Marc Jacobs, a prime example, recently recruited Big Bang to produce the accessories for his Spring ’06 line-up. Let’s just say that it’s been a busy year for Bing Bang.
Now, with their first men’s collection, the Brooklyn-based design duo opted for a raw and elegant simplicity that suggests a rough and tumble working class spirit: no flash, no bling, no flamboyant stonework. Made from elements of unembellished silver, steel and brass, there’s a rustic sensibility to these handmade pieces and a careful attention to detail that steers clear of trendiness if favour of raw simplicity.
The men’s line was inspired by the age-old blacksmithing techniques of the Gangs of New York-era: a rugged style that seems to work with the times. Designer Sheffield, who has a background in metalworking, has used the articulateness of metal-smithing to give each piece of Bing Bang jewelry its unique brass-knuckle edge.
The jewelry label has made a name for itself by producing dark, original women’s jewelry, dexterously spinning out a steady stream of fresh hot pieces, completely free of glam showiness. The hand textures and hammered finishing give the pieces, a bygone charm.
The name of the design firm is a reference to the sound of a hammer against anvil, yet it could easily indicate the impression it has made on the industry. Keep an eye on Bing Bang.
