ave you seen 101 Reykjavik? It's about a floundering 20-something Icelander that impregnates his mother's lover, a flamenco instructor named Lola. Damon Albarn soundtracked the film with several variations on the Kinks' "Lola".
For years, whenever I heard the name "Lola," it would lodge itself in my head for days on end. Even suggestions of the word would lead to a Ray Davies monopoly on my internal soundtrack. Humbert Humbert narration and below-average temperatures would cause shower song sessions of a bellowed "and it tastes just like cherry cola." Also, any reference to Iceland would conjure the lyrics.
Things changed slightly when I first heard the Stills' "Lola Stars and Stripes." Now, I associate Iceland and flamenco with Montreal tussle and scruff rock. Strange. -S.T.
