anada is a young country with a history book that reads like last years stock options. If you ask a Canadian what culture they identify with almost none of them would say Canadian. Multiculturalism is written into our Bill of Rights thereby negating any sort of nationalistic feelings about Canada. Everybody here is from somewhere else.
Cuba on the other hand has had a vibrant history that reads like the new Harry Potter. Cubans have a culture complete with music and food and dress and language. They have roots to grow from and years of change to reflect upon. They have had groundbreaking revolutions and shaky foreign relations. They have been to war and back and they have held their ground in the face of the world’s largest superpower.
The new Cuban art exhibition at the MMFA consists of over 400 works of art from 1868 to today. The pieces are beautiful and telling. Let’s hope that during the five months this art is in Montreal a taste of its cultural flavour seeps into the streets of Montreal and inspires Canadian nationalism. –J.T.
