 t's a wonder that a fancy spa didn't already exist in Old Montreal. Relaxation compliments the beauty of the architecture in such a way as to warrant it. Benoît Berthiaume is building Scandinave Les Bains Vieux-Montreal as one of what he hopes will be a string of Scandinave Les Bains all over Canada. There's a lot of money going into this venture (about $4.5 million) in order to ensure that the 12,000 square-foot former warehouse will become everything that a spa should be. And he has very strict definitions about what it should be.
For one, he's looking to reinstate the original definition of the word "spa", an acronym for the Latin phrase Sanitas Per Aquam: health via water. That means there will there be a ton of baths: thermal spas, hammam, Norwegian baths, Finnish saunas – the works. There'll also be a judicious use of waterfalls all over the space, heated seats and floors, massage rooms, juice bar, and an area to take a nap. It's an old school vibe that matches the area that it will be located. - R.T.
