Location: 380 St-Jacques West, Montreal, QC
he taps won’t be flowing for a while at St. James Pub, located on St. Jacques Street. The liquor license at this Old Montreal watering hole was suspended January 18, after the pub was ruled a danger to public safety by the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux. Even its recent renovation into a chic dance bar wasn’t enough to drive out the riff-raff.
The list of incidents that ultimately ended up having the pub closed reads like a script of Law & Order. There’s been an attempted murder, which left four wounded. Last summer, arson destroyed part of the club. Three people were stabbed in a gang fight outside of the club last July. The pub has been overcapacity six times (well, six times that the police were aware of, that is.) One person was arrested with a loaded .25-calibre pistol (this just keeps getting better, doesn’t it?) Oh, and of course, a plethora of patrons have been found possessing drugs, although in light of the aforementioned crimes that should be the least of your worries.
As if all this wasn’t enough, the club owner has been previously convicted of assault and extortion, so you’d have been wise to watch your mouth around him and his bouncers. The Régie said that he’s often been seen at the club with known criminals. And his brother was arraigned in 2006 for charges of importing cocaine, which is pending trial.
Just throwing this out there – you may be happy that this place has shuttered up for a while. If, and when, it reopens in several months time, here’s to hoping that things will finally take a turn for the better. St. James Pub; thanks for the memories and best wishes for the future – you’re going to need it. –D.C. | | |
