Location: 990 De Maisonneuve Blvd. W., Montreal, QC
Montreal is famous both for its smoked meat and for its unique hotels, but in the case of this MBO piece of the lowdown, hotels win. Recently, haute hotelier, Jean Salette, announced his plans to raze one of Monty's landmarks, Ben's Delicatessan and replace it with his third St-Martin Hôtel.
Although I am quite sure Ben's served up sandwiches to more than a handful of businessmen, the "plush, intimate", 123 room St-Martin Hôtel plans to cater almost exclusively to a corporate clientele. It might not have salami on rye, but the hotel will feature a two-storey restaurant complete with a streetlevel terrace along de Maisonneuve. St. Martin will also house a year-round outdoor swimming pool and terrace that will be heated.
Ben's wasn't the best in the city, not by a longshot, but 4-star ammenities or not, I'm not sure how the city has the audacity to tear an institution as ubiquitous as Ben's down. It's just the latest in a line of landmark delis taking the plunge.
Saint Martin Hotel will open in 2011.
