Location: 1812 rue Ste-Catherine Ouest, Montreal, QC
t's hard to see a Montreal institution close its doors, especially without an explanation. After 52 years of service and distinction, Le Paris has finally thrown in the towel. The red-and-white striped awning has been a familiar sight on St. Catherine Street since 1812 and the café has been open since 1956, but it just couldn't stay in the game. A notice posted on the door reads "In spite of our efforts and our hard work, we are obliged to close our doors". Whether it's competition, a poor economy, or just a lack of enthusiasm that did it in, we don't know, but it's sad to see Le Paris go.
Located just a couple of blocks from CBC, Her Majesty's Theatre, and the Forum, the café drew a ton of celebrities over the years despite the unpretentious and frankly, quite shabby, interior. Big names such as Charles Trenet, Charles Aznavour, and Mick Jagger have dined there over the years. They would vouch that, despite the lack of polish, this family-run restaurant was one of the most authentic and, no exaggeration, best French restaurants in the city. Let's hope that the space will be used to its fullest in the future. - R.T. | | |
