he sibling duo of Thien and My Ta Trung have been creating their self designed and hand made furniture since he was 24 and she 21- a young age to demonstrate such a high level of design know-how and prowess. Their line, Periphere, is distributed to retailers; but the painstaking process that went into their craftsmanship meant that the prices were astronomical, and unaffordable by the mid 20s-30s crowd who loved their stuff.
So what's a designer to do but try to appeal to the desires of their audience? The demand led to the creation of Domison (combining domicile and maison, meaning house and home), a store which carriers their more affordable line of stuff by the same name, and with a better price point. The showroom was designed by the so hip it hurts Bazysgerard firm, who left the space very raw with exposed piping and beams.
Expect low and long pieces, like the Uptown three-seater couch. Though there is enough selection to create a full bedroom or den set, this stuff still isn't cheap. Beds are around $1400, and dressers run at $985. The store also supports fellow Canadian designers, so expect household knick knacks by Looolo and Furni. Go to the store and admire the furniture, and maybe you can afford to leave with a candleholder for $45. -C.S.
