lack Sheep Betty owner, Amy Arnott, is hell bent on bringing something new to the ever-increasing big box retail outlet strip that essentially is rue St. Catherine. The long lane of monotonous consumerism is full to the brim with cheaply made, mass produced imports that are starting to spill over into the bits of Montreal we actually care about. We grasp at any chance we can get to champion local talent of interest and quality. It is particularly satisfying when cloned St. Catherine shoppers ogle our unique wears with a jealous abandon. Amy’s shop/gallery/creative hub is a big fat point scored on the side of small-scale Montreal artists looking to make a decent living.
Black Sheep Betty is an art and clothing gallery that carries local one-of-a-kind gems. Investment art works by Eric Robitaille, Bfor and Gaston decorate the walls and loom over the stores namesakes – big balls of black fluff that greet customers at the door and moonlight as sheep. Unique local jewelry designers, clothing creators and even make-up artists are on Black Betty`s roster. The next time you want to stand out from the throngs of Zara and Winners-clad drones pop into the new-ish Parc Avenue shop and pick up an item to be remembered by. –J.T.
