Ronnies Local 069
Kensington Market Lounge lizards love slithering their way into this beloved DIY patio at Ronnie's. Housed just off of the main Kensington artery, there's more to this joint than getting sauced over a Corona. With solid laid-back service, deep wood tones, comfort grub, and heat from the sun, this is one of the more comfortable establishments we've seen in some time. Settle in. You earned it. – MBO. $. 69 Nassau Street, 416-340-1110.
Roof Lounge
Combining a classic-bar vibe and rampant shish, this Park Hyatt rooftop pit stop is well deserving of a visit. Nothing goes with a $14 Cosmo like a skyline view. Surrounded by candles and flowers, this lounge's crowd tends to grow as the sun sinks into the sparkling Toronto view. A nice respite from the rowdiness of the club scene, this is a good place to feel like a grownup while still drinking like a student. Slobs will stand out, so dress up to avoid glares. -MBO. $$$$. 4 Avenue Road (Park Hyatt Hotel), 416-924-5471.
The Rushton
The chances of finding just the right crowd required for a good night out in T.O seems to have improved over the past year. New spots like The Rushton are luring in the all the cool folks with their classy and respectable atmosphere combined with refreshingly reasonable prices…and the recently added patio doesn't hurt either. Imbibers can drink serious cocktails and watch the motley St. Clair crew (because nothing inspires thirst like the toil and suffering of others). With a happy-hour crowd that sings the body eclectic, this bar proves that everyone has common interests, even proletariats and yuppies. – MBO. $$$. 740 St. Clair Avenue West, 416-658-7874.
Sassafraz
Sassafraz is a bar that really takes off during September. That’s when all the celebrities visiting the city for Tiff stock the location looking to drink heavily and remind everybody about how famous/important they are. However, ignoring this sweet drinking spot until the fall would be a serious mistake. Sassafraz has a delightful patio located in the heart of Yorkville. Sure, you won’t be able to star-gaze, but you’d better believe that you’ll be able to stare down rich people in their natural habitat. It’s almost like going to the zoo…but a zoo for the wealthy. Doesn’t that sound freakin’ great? –P.B. $$$. 100 Cumberland Street, 416-964-2222.
7 West Café
For years, the Martiniboys.com staff has hit this bar (strictly for research purposes, of course). Along the way, we have sampled apple martinis (they're green), pastas, pizzas, Greek pita, and other pub-style sandwiches. Try going late one night (the place is open 24 hours daily) to get a spot on the uber-tiny two-table patio overlooking Charles Street. Get the barkeep make you some cool signature something-or-other that may or may not contain Stoli, Midori, Southern Comfort and sweet-and-sour mix. We'll stick to Cosmopolitans, thanks. - S.W. $$. 7 Charles Street West, 416-928-9041.
SkyBar
This patio isn’t going to come to you easily. No, you’ll be forced to navigate through a maze of hot bodies and disco-balled rooms to arrive at the pleasantly surprising rooftop deck. SkyBar is a classic international club patio. It has everything that you’d expect from rooftop: flashing lights, crisp sound, a well-dressed crowd, a decent view and sexy, writhing hip and swinging arms. This spot holds 400, so cell phone is necessary to find anyone. You’ll be that asshole talking on his phone at the club, but at least you’ll find you’re date.- P.B. $$$$$. 132 Queens Quay East, 416-869-0045.
SkyLounge
Tucked behind the InterContinental hotel, just off of stylish Bloor Street, is the trendy-chic SkyLounge. The elegance of the space is the highlight of this lounge: styled by Cecconi Simone, designer sofas, Brazilian wood cocktail tables and silk pillows were trucked in straight from Simone’s Oni One showroom. With tidy arrangements of table settings and cool corners of tufted sofas, Skylounge makes that little walkway off Bloor Street worthwhile. With the added touches of lush foliage and greenery, combined with candlelight and world music, SkyLounge transports guests to a tropical oasis in the heart of the city. If you are looking for that designer barbeque experience, then go hangout on Thursday Grill nights and devour wild boar burgers and peppercorn crusted grilled pineapple. –C.S. 220 Bloor Street West, 416-960-5200
Spice Route
The creators of Tatoo Rock Parlour present a million dollar plus nightspot that is sure to bring in the drooling King West club crowd in droves. The 220-seat capacity dining room opens out onto a hedonistic, wrap-around patio where concrete blends with cedar, and koi happily swim alongside diners in their custom-built pond. Executive Chef Winlai Wong packs a punch with his roll call of homeland northern heat and southern sweet treats in an inexhaustible list of shared plates that should satisfy even the most bitter and fickle of foodies. Make no mistake, this is a patio spot for a very specific and very elite crowd. But those who can afford to be admitted will love it more a chocolate-covered credit card lined in gold. –MBO. $$$$. 499 King Street West, 416-849-1808.
Sutra
This Polynesian oasis has all the crucial ingredients for a perennial camp classic: bamboo walls, loofah cocktail tables and an ongoing parade of Tiki cocktails, including Fog Cutter (Rum, Brandy Gin), Wicky Wacky Woo (Coconut rum, melon liquor, pineapple juice) and the Hula Hula (vodka, pineapple, coconut and mango juices). These high-octane Slurpees will fool you with their tropical, fruity charm, but be warned: these babies pack a powerful punch. Have you ever seen that classic
Kids In The Hall sketch “Girl Drink Drunk”? Because that’s exactly what will happen if you’re not careful.-MBO. $$. 612 College Street, 416-537-8755.
