The summer is starting to wind down and you are faced with a novel concept: you haven't taken your holiday days yet. Pack your bags and pick any of these destinations for a whirlwind of a trip, because when things get going in September, you won't get another break until December. Do you really think that you can go that long? Here are some suggestions that may not automatically be the first to come to mind, but exciting nonetheless.

    Sicily, Italy
Sicily has had a bad rap for being overrun by mobsters and crime, but if you avoid it for stereotypical reasons, then you are missing out on a truly unique history. Less touristy than other parts of the country, expect authentic Italian life and culture, like in the capital of Palermo. If you want to venture outside of an urban centre, visit the beach resort of Cefalu, or for the more adventurous, go to Mt. Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe.

    Jordan
For all its romantic associations, Jordan's reputation is equally bruised by its often (false) threats of instability and violence. But do read up on security warnings before you go. Eco-tourism is the newest trend to take over the region, with trips to the ancient city of Petra and the desert-scapes of Wadi Rum offering an alternative to the urban centre of Amman. Wadi Rum provides a ton to do, including camel riding, hiking, and scaling mountains. Grab a jeep tour to see the most of the area. Before you leave the country, go to visit Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

    Budapest, Hungary
Going to Europe is usually a pricey venture. But taking a gander at the Eastern region could save you some major bucks. Though not as popular as more central Paris or Rome, Budapest is significantly cheaper and with just as many sights to see and things to do. Visit the old town district of Castle Hill, and savor a cuisine unlike anything you would eat at home, while classic architecture provides entertainment for leisurely days roaming the streets, and a great nightlife scene will have you saying "We'll always have Budapest."
