It’s getting cold and colder outside, and Christmas is getting closer and closer, so we here at martiniboys.com thought that you might need a couple of distractions from all of that, to keep your mind occupied. Little Joe or Jane’s list and letters to Santa shouldn’t be the only things occupying your day. For an evening of hot, passionate music, you simply can’t go wrong with Alex Cuba. Although his songs are in Spanish, this does not take away from the connection you feel when you see him perform live. Musically gifted in every way, go see the man with the trademark afro and sideburns. Alex Cube will be at L’Astral. (Friday, November 27) More Friday night fun here.

Would you like to go and see a barely gown up, little Canadian girl wail on a keytar for an evening? Well then I’m sure that Lights can help fill that craving. After coming out with a few subsequent EP’s in 2008 and then the full blown album, The Listening, in 2009, Lights has managed to snatch up her little piece of the synth pop seen in a hurry. The Timmins born singer-songwriter sights her main influences as Bjork, and Depeche Mode. Hey wait a minute, Lights actually sighted Bjork? Sorry honey, but I just don’t see it; you’re just not obscurely cool enough. Lights will be performing at Studio Juste Pour Rire. (Saturday, Nov. 28th) More cool stuff here.

Why is it that most, if not all, Vancouver indie rock bands seem to sound and look the same? Perhaps it’s all of that pot, or rain, or perhaps both. I realize that I’m just drawing from stereo types here, but that’s the exact niche that Jets Overhead seem to fit into. From how I see it, they are average, and don’t really break any boundaries, or even attempt to for that matter. Jets Overhead seems perfectly contend in pandering to one specific denominator, and I guess that’s good enough for them. After all denominators seem to pay the bills for a lot of people, especially when it comes to music. Musee Juste Pour Rire is where Jets Overhead will be playing. (Saturday, Nov. 28th) Jets Overhead and more here.

Quite a weekend of variety if I do say so myself, but if this isn’t enough for you, and you happen to like women who wear dresses that eat their face, then you may want to go and check out the Lady Gaga concert happening at the Bell Center on Friday night. But who needs that nonsense when you have of this other stuff to choose from. After all this is the service that I pride myself on the most; helping you have fun.
