e're getting to that point of the season where one starts to settle into their summer routine of particular cafes, clubs, and restaurants. Not so fast! Don't be subjected to the same mundane cycle of places you've been going to for the last few years, instead try these ones on for size. Yah that's right, we're keeping you in the know.
Cafés
Everyone knows the place with the old Pepsi sign on Harbord. This is where Israeli expats Daniel Cohen (formerly a software engineer) and Eldad Jungreis (who also runs the hummus and pesto distributor Sunflower Kitchens), have recently opened
Wild Thing. Apparently people become so relaxed there, that they forget to pay. Each has their own passions of coffee and gelato respectively. Sandwiches, such as the brie, apple, and garlic, served with greens, are a good snack option, but what we're really there for are the homemade gelatos. Pineapple and basil is refreshing in this age of global warming; while the apple, raisin, and cinnamon tastes just like homemade apple pie. Just about everything is organic, or wholesome in some manner. As Cohen stated, banana ice cream shouldn't be yellow. Wild Thing indeed, makes everything groovy.
The high ceilings and airy feel of
Greenavi Cafe (green because it's organic, and navi is the Korean word for butterfly) make the space ideal for displaying artwork. Right now, it’s the owner's paintings, but look out for a steady rotation of works from up and comings. The café serves almost exclusively organic products, from coffee to sandwiches. The desserts come from bakeries around the city, and a lot of them, such as carrot cake and blueberry pie, are vegan. Popular iced chai lattes and smoothies are refreshing to sip on while doing work in the free WIFI environment. Want to hold a summer soiree? The space is also available for private functions.
