Baldwin Barmacie
Entering the Baldwin Barmacie for the first time feels like entering the lounge in the space-satellite of Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey.” From the long wood passerelle and the white sixties furnishing, to the tiny ashtrays, the feel is very Kubrick. While the non-energy scene can occasionally get underwhelming, locals are still drawn into this neighbourhood haunt by the fluids. Even though it can get cramped, rest assured that the $18 drinks are poured with a heavy hand. 115 Laurier Ouest, Montreal, QC

Bily Kun
Ambiance comes in heavy doses at this hallucinogenic fuel station: oil tea lamps spew dancing flames from each table in the lofty space. The ‘vanity fair’ rolls in after eight o’clock looking to wreak havoc on Kůň’s barkeeps. One dance with The Green Fairy will give you a fuzzy feeling, while several will take you into Van Gogh territory. That said, Bílý Kůň is about more than just absinth. It’s a cozy saloon, accessible to anybody looking to put a few back while enjoying a healthy serving of Eastern European nostalgia. Try not to cut your ear off. - M.L. 354 Mont-Royal East, Montreal, QC

Bourdoir Chez Roger
Though the name refers to a woman’s sitting room, finding a seat here - or even a standing table - is nearly impossible after 6:00pm. But keeping people vertical and on the move encourages conversation and fuels Chez Roger’s social intercourse (stop giggling, child). The bevy of beautiful barkeeps and servers are far more than just pretty faces; they are competent, quick and need no coaxing when invited to join in on a round of cocktails. The chic décor and atmosphere attracts a mix of party professionals and part-time clubbers with perimeter seating, stand-ups, brick inlay, marble flooring, high ceilings and a gorgeous bar. – ML. 2300 Beaubien Street East, Montreal, QC

Buona Notte
Do you like plush? Do you like martinis? Do you like wood? Well, Buona Notte boasts all that and more. Elegant and only mildly pretentious, this St. Laurent corporate bug-lamp caters to scenesters and bill-droppers alike. The intimate dance floor is moved by vastly varying beats from night to night, while the extensive wine list is static and impressive. Have a good night. 3518 St Laurent, Montreal, QC
