he newest Mexican restaurant on St. Catherine is not far from the famous and well-established 3 Amigos down the street. But location is where the resemblance ends. This small spot aims to offer a true non-Tex Mex taste for those lonely for authentic south of the US border flavor and introduce Montréal to the real thing, at a fair price.
It resembles a little cantina decorated with colorful piñata type paper hanging from the ceiling and includes a cozy little couch nook for fútbol (soccer) watching with a schedule posted outside. Everything is home made on the premises, no crunchy tacos here, and a wide selection of combinations of sincronizadas, tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas and the like keep it interesting. Mexican beer and signature margaritas to be added soon. - S.C.

As a Texas ex-pat, I'm always on the lookout for good border or interior Mexican in Montreal. Taqueria La Nacion did not disappoint. The food was tasty, warm and plentiful. The two salsas (one red, one green) that arrive with tortilla chips before the meal were the best I've had in Montreal. For once, a resto that does not skimp on the peppers! The taco plates are plentiful, with an authentic flavor thanks in part to the homemade corn tortillas. Both the soups we tried, the tortilla soup and the caldo pollo (chicken and rice) were rich and satisfying. To drink, try one of the freshly-made "aguas frescas" in flavors such as mango, strawberry, Jamaica (hibiscus) or horchata (spiced rice and milk). On the downside, the room was a bit chilly and the lunchtime service was understaffed (one gal working the whole room, thankfully a friendly one). I'd recommend Taqueria La Nacion if you're looking for a taste of Mexico without getting on an airplane.
