ur Bleury is a long-awaited lunch spot that gives downtown patrons the excuse not to attend the city's food courts, all of which exist in the subterranean depths of Montreal. The featured items on the menu are the sandwiches that show a diversity on this age-old classic that breathes fresh life into what one can put between two slices of bread.
The braised pork with ancho chile ($8.50) is a favorite among the regular customers. The soft, shredded meat, coloured a deep orange-red, is flavoured with, in addition to the chile, fennel, cinnamon and oregano, and the sandwich is also piled with tomato, avocado, cilantro and spicy labneh (a Lebanese yogurt cheese spread).
There is also a fish and pineapple sandwich ($11.25) that starts a party on your tongue. The fish is delicate fried tilapia with sliced roasted pineapple, cilantro, labneh and lime.
Sur Bleury also has a selection of three variations on the classic grilled cheese, one of which melts extra-strong Perron cheddar over caramelized pears($4.75).
So, I suggest all you downtown dwellers get above ground on your lunch hours and experience what a Sur Bleury sandwich has to offer. -J.T.
