    Aug. 20, 2007 - Brad Jamieson

Evan's dorky acquaintance Fogell (Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who was plucked from MySpace obscurity) has scored a dubious-looking Hawaii driver's license that says he’s a 25-year-old Hawaiian organ donor called McLovin, with which they plan to buy alcohol and potentially gain access to a major party thrown by impossibly perfect hottie, Jules (Emma Stone). Needless to say, snags ensue.

What transpires next is a citywide expedition involving adolescent cops (scene-stealers Seth Rogan and Bill Hader), and it is in these misadventures with the psycho cops that are the film's most powerhouse moments of hilarity. When it’s funny, “Superbad” is truly nasty, truly funny, completely ignoring the lines of taste. Still, the film suffers from an unnecessary length; clocking in at over two hours - too long for a high school comedy - Superbad can be exhausting.

The characters keep finding ways to surprise us, locating improbably touching pangs of pathos, even as you can’t believe what you’re hearing. While Superbad could be the most provocative teen sex comedy released since Fast Times at Ridgemont High, the story's finale, curiously enough, is handled with simplicity and grace, with our boys learning that the crucial life lessons are not nearly as scary as they thought they were.
