emember back in Kindergarten when lunchtime was a regular clique-fest? In my school the lunch program kids were at war with the brown-baggers. I was always on the lunch program team and regularly poked fun at the brown-baggers forced to carry their lunch to school. Secretly though, if I were to be honest with you, I always envied the brown-baggers. Their mothers lovingly packed them up sandwiches and juice boxes, sometimes including a note that said, “Have a great day, honey. Love, Mom. XOXO.”

My mum just paid off my daycare and I got what everyone else got for lunch: dry chicken fingers and soggy fries. The point of this random recount is that I have just recently found a place where I can heal my brown bag cravings and childhood scars. Sac Wich, the brand new lunch joint in Laval, serves up tasty sandwiches in a brown bag just like Kindergarten.

This is how it works: Customers choose from eight different menus that are printed on brown bags. These include Beef, Chicken, Batta-Pizza, Italian, Kids, Lite, Meal Salad and This Week’s Special. Guests then check off their meal choice, indicate any additions or substitutions to their choice and write their name in the big name box at the bottom of the bag. Then customers hang up their brown bag, like clean laundry on a clothesline, to be pulled through to the prep kitchen where their order is made up and tossed in the brown bag to be returned to the customer when they make it to the cash. Sac Wich is like Subway in terms of personalized orders - but faster, with better food and ambiance. Like I said before, I’m on the brown-bagger team now.

Batta-Pizza is pizza baked on ciabatta bread. The Buca sandwich comes with thinly sliced roasted veal, melted Gouda and provolone cheeses, slow-roasted yellow and red peppers, sliced fresh tomatoes, roasted eggplant and spicy Italian sauce. My personal favorite is La Tour Tuna with thick chunks of white tuna, roasted onions, crispy romaine, Sac Wich’s signature mayo, melted cheddar and mozzarella and sliced granny smith apples. Sac Wich even offers catering and the special namesake lunchbox with personalized food items for everyone in the office.
