f there's one persistent problem that I always have in Montreal, it's the constant struggle to get a decent bowl of rice pudding. Lord knows that I've laid awake many nights in desperate hope that a bowl of the chunky, yet creamy dessert would appear magically on my bedside table. Tragically it's never happened, but fortunately it will never have to happen. Culinary artist Daren Bergeron (chef of Festival Montreal En Lumiere and executive chef of DECC 77 Restaurant) has helped create Riz en Folie, a rice pudding-only restaurant taking up residence on rue Mackay (finally!).
Bergeron has created roughly 20 flavors of the delicious treat designed to suit all tastes. Options like Black cherry, blueberry, chocolate-mint, apple pie, mango, and coconut are virtually guaranteed to challenge every thought you've ever had about the possibilities of rice pudding. And if the flavored creamy goodness isn't enough to satisfy your needs, you can always garnish your bowl with a variety of toppings like fruit, chocolate, nuts or coulis. Rice pudding may have once been the dessert that everyone wanted to avoid in summer camp, but if Bergeron had been involved, kids would have been climbing over each other to get a bowl.
Considering the niche appeal of this restaurant, it can be found in a surprisingly large and fashionably designed space. The walls, furniture, and most of the clients are almost painfully white in Philippe Stark/Apple commercial way. It feels like the dessert bar of the future or at least looks like one from a 70s sci-fi movie. So, if you ever have a hankering for some sweet, sweet rice pudding, this is the place for you. They even offer delivery and catering options if decide that you never want to eat anything else again.

5 Reader Reviews | Nice little spot, but I was surprised to see it on your cheap eats guide - for rice pudding, it's fairly expensive.

Cute spot. Not really a lunch type affair, but for rice pudding, it's a great find.

Came here for the first time today. Had the blueberry rice pudding To-Go. Everything was awesome and they would've gotten 5-stars if not for the small styrofoam container.

Uhhmm. This review is placed in the Toronto restarants section but it is a Montreal restaurant.

Still five stars duh, but I wanted to add, try the pudding! I never knew that I liked the stuff until I visited this little place. My boyfriend went with me and loved this place. Oh yeah.
