A re you a Japanese food loving Montrealer who is tired of the over-emphasis on sushi in this fair city? Don’t get me wrong, a good sushi restaurant can top 95% of the eateries out there. But, sometimes you want Japanese cuisine that goes beyond sushi. You want something with spice, something with flair, something with noodles, and most of all something cooked.
Ramen-ya is first and foremost a ramen restaurant. Surprise, surprise. I wouldn't go here for sushi. There are other places for that. We love this place for its take on Japanese comfort food... consistent flavours, super yummy ramen, and endless choices which always leave you satisfied.
The restaurant is small (there’s seating for about 25) and minimally decorated, but this only adds to the DIY charm. It makes Ramen-Ya feel like a hidden gem, a little locale of culinary excellence that few will ever visit.
The menu isn’t particularly massive either, but this place is all about quality over quantity. Choices for appetizers include nice gyoza, a surprisingly scrumptious sesame pancake (think scallion pancake minus the scallian), and a very satisfying vegetarian spring roll. When it comes time to dive into the ramen dishes, there are three choices of broth available: soy, miso, and curry.
Most ramen purists will be disgusted by the fact that any restaurant would serve multiple broths rather than sticking to a house specialty, but Ramen-Ya is not for them. They can move to Japan if it means that much to them. Everyone else can enjoy the freedom of choice.

2 Reader Reviews | I love this place. From the appetizers to the desserts, everything is quality. I have been to many asian restaurants in Montreal and this is the only restaurant I had no complaints from the beginning till the end of my meal. Service is friendly, the sushi's have a perfect balance between rice and ingredients, they have all my favorite noodle soups, from tempura udon to tempura zaru soba (cold buckwheat noodles) which I had a hard time finding elsewhere. If you are looking for quantity, maybe not your place although for me, I find myself satisfied after the meal, and wow, no waste, and mostly, I am not about to explode.

I went today for the first time, to try the "best on the menu" tonkatsu ramen. However, was quite disappointed. The portion could be slightly bigger, considering you are paying 10 bucks for it. Soup base and noodle was quite okay, am not picky about the noodle if the soup was good enough. What was really disappointing, was the fried pork that comes with the ramen, it's unbelievably thin, i have never seen fried pork in a Japanese restaurant be so thin!(make me felt that they were too cheap) and fried way too dry. But, my friend had the unagi don, said it was quite nice but could be bigger portion also, he also found the sushi quite okay.
I would say this restaurant is pretty okay overall just wasn't as good as i expected from the descriptions in this article.
