Jul. 6, 2006 - Brad Jamieson
Meanwhile, the now disgraced Commodore Norrington (Jack Davenport) joins Jack's crew but he has other plans for that chest. Throughout the journey, we’ll observe chance encounters with Will's father, Bootstrap Bill (Stellan Skarsgard), who had lost his soul to Davy; a blackened-tooth Jamaican soothsayer, Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris); and Mercer (David Schofield), Beckett's informer in disguise.
It does appear that the original movie's swashbuckling spirit has gone a bit stale, as "Dead Man's Chest" is constantly silly and not as much fun as you’d expect with all these goods. Dariusz Wolski's cinematography beautifully captures Rich Heinrich's extravagant sets, while Hans Zimmer's efficient score of organ music helps the action flow. Aside from a impressive visual feast, the film provides little flow from scene to scene.
Where the last movie had piracy, fencing, gun battles, and drunken singing, Dead Man’s Chest has CGI craziness and abundant screaming. For the record, Dead Man's Chest is the first of two sequels shot back to back - à la The Matrix Reloaded - as the second and third films were shot simultaneously in the Caribbean with the final installment due next May.
