hink tapas is so yesterday? Think again. It seems as though this year was devoted to small plates, but our vote for the year's most promising new tapas joint goes to Pintxo, who dished out the most wildly original one-bite treats. Billed as a “nueva modiva Basqua,” the Spanish Basque restaurant doles out modern Basque bites - also known as Pintxo’s (make sense?). Filet of Basque cod served with pepper and tomato salsa is sophisticated and satisfying, while the Pintxo de Pulpo a la gallega is a mini squid indulgence. Mains (Los Platos) are also imaginatively done. The Filet Mignon with goat cheese is superb; served rare and lightly filmed with herbal butter, the steak is almost buoyant in its flavourful juices. A saffron risotto helps to give the pan-roasted duck breast a winning Spanish flair. Equally heady is the calf lamb with couscous. Sliced into ruddy coins, the meat is tender, flavourful and ably supported by an intense reduction of red wine and shallots. As for the scene: is a good Spanish eatery ever anything but lively? -K.J.

5 Reader Reviews | each mouthful is such a pleasure that you find yourself chewing slowly to savour the moment, even if a mouthful is all you are served. I have been there many times and have never been disappointed. The food is so flavourful and the service is exceptional - among the best of my Montreal experiences. Pinxto looses marks on the atmosphere but maybe that's what makes it better - there's nothing pretentious about it, it's all about the food experience, not about the chairs.

An excellent find for anyone seeking great food and service. I have visited Montreal in 2005 and 2007, residing in the Plateau neighborhood. I often had walked by this restaurant, finally stopping by this summer to discover it's ambiance. My only regret is that I did not try it earlier. The service was impeccably friendly and helpful with food and wine options. I took friends from the States both times and they were equally impressed with all aspects of the restaurant. Next time I return to Montreal, I will head back to Pinxto. The Plateau is incredible with food options, and this restaurant ranks near the best. Merci.
