Over the Hedge
May 22, 2006 - Aaron Jacobs
They resist at first, but once they've tasted the forbidden fruit of a nacho cheese chip, there's no stopping them. Dazzled by this exciting stranger and blinded by nacho dust, the normally sensible foragers jump at the chance for an MSG-fueled adventure.
The animals’ forays into suburbia draw the attention of the head of the neighborhood association, a control-freak career woman (Allison Janney) who hires a paunchy commando exterminator (Thomas Haden Church) playing out a Rambo fantasy on the critters. Welcome to civilization!
Songs are provided by Ben Folds, whose second album was called Rockin' the Suburbs and whose spiky, piano-driven pop gets stuck in syrupy sentiment here. The computer animation won't blow your mind but the movie delivers on the broad comedy, but the small moments are what really put in the right direction.
