  • Mykonos

While Mykonos has taken over the space that was previously a martini bar, the restaurant has really captured the entire area. The owners have thoroughly explored the area, bringing in their strong distinctive Greek menu to create a reputable dining spot. Though you can still get a martini.

The décor is unimpressively simple, suggesting that the main reason to be impressed is the fare, and not an elaborately ornate room. Walls are a muted yellow, not that faded yellow you’re used to seeing in old apartments, but rather designer-distressed walls that have been faux-aged (but in a good, clean way).

While hanging lamps and ultrasuede banquettes provide nice touches of ambiance, a flat screen TV, unfortunately, invites too much of a sports bar aura. A musical backing provides some bounce, but a bit more effort (aka budget) and the Mykonos décor would match the exceptional cuisine.

Being a Greek eatery, many dishes may require an open mind - and brave attitude. For example, flaming saganaki (fried cheese), horta (steamed dandelion greens), or octopus are atypical menu offerings that should be considered. The octopus, for example, isn’t as slimy and unappealing as you may think. To the contrary, this appetizer is well prepared, plated with red onion, red pepper, capers, and green onions. If that still isn’t enough to tempt you try the Greek-style chicken seasoned with thyme and oregano.

Mykonos, for the record, is a Greek island, known for their raving nightlife and cosmopolitan atmosphere. While Mykonos in Montreal is not quite known for its party-party vibe, the food is decidedly Greek, but interesting enough to entice the adventurous type.
