  • Monkland Taverne

The Monkland Tavern is now the Monkland Taverne, due to the language watchdog's pathetic demands that its sign be in French. The Monk normally featured signs in both languages anyway, but in March, a complainant alerted the language police. The 50-year-old neon landmark came down and the new sign went up.

It’s unfortunate to take down a sign that’s been up there for almost 50 years. The tavern even won a heritage prize last year in part because of that very ‘50’s neon sign. But the Office de la langue Française ruled the English sign was too large. So, a new sign that was a scaled down was erected, and should sanctify Big (Française) Brother. - B.J.

    Eric Boucher, you are... retarded.

Only a retard would invest typing in a "protection de la langue francaise" but then again.. maybe that makes me retarted too... to even care.

I think you shoul review your comment about the "pathetic demands" for a french sign...This as NOTHING do to with the quality of the place what so ever...I wont start an argument here but you should know that this kind of childish comment have no place here or anywhere else for that matter.

Whatever happened to the great bartender who made the best martinis in the world. I think his name was David. This guy had style, edge and a nasty habit of getting me and most of my friends sloshed. Not to mention turning drink making into an art form. He has been sadly missed by me and my friends. he restaurant is still pretty good but just not quite tha same since this guy left.
