Ali Khan, o

wner of
Maharaja, the largest Indian Buffet in North America, has major plans for his city. In the semi-vague future, he is gearing up to open up an $80 million, 34-story downtown luxury hotel and condominium complex that houses the restaurant. But for now, Khan's big news is
MNB Nightclub (or Midnight Blue), a swanky club that functions, one hopes, as more than just a suitable filler for the nightlife chasm left when
Discotheque H Henry closed its once-pounded-upon doors.
Making itself suitable for the Montreal crepuscular crowd,
MNB spreads itself thin functioning both as a full service restaurant and a round-the-clock dance club.
MNB, in other words, falls into that not exactly trendsetting category known as the supperclub – an ostensible evening's Eden for the indecisive, where 'round about 10pm, outgo the dining tables and incomes the dance floor.
Though the idea of the supperclub does seem to make sense, what is often the case with this type of venue is that both the food and entertainment end up sub-par because not enough time is allotted to perfect either. While
MNB's all grilled menu of sharing plates does seem streamlined and suitable for the environment, I get the sense that the über modern spot will do a lot better in the clubbing department than in the supping.
Catering to a 25+ demographic, the
MNB space has an upscale elegance that doesn't summon up visions of under-aged girls or the slimy men who prey on them. Rife with walnut woods, multi-coloured crystal chandeliers, and opaque walls that change colours by way of hidden LED lights, the modern looking spot does look both good enough to eat in and a shame to waste on the blurred vision of randoms drinking themselves silly on house-mixologist Mark Marangos's specialty mojitos. Luckily, the mature thirty-somethings, likely to inhabit the Montreal hotspot, can make their way onto the terrace where vomiting on the white-leather tufted portions of the walls doesn't pose a threat.
Instead, the small but functional terrace, features a full service bar (specializing in scotch, cognac, and whiskey), heat lamps, and an adjustable canopy. And, if one is interested in taking a hit off the hookah, a chicha bar is set-up for his apple-tobacco smoking pleasure.
