    With La Montée firmly situated at Bishop and St. Catherine, upscale dining in these parts has increased dramatically. Long time Montée diners will know this Montreal restaurant's original location (and original name - La Montée de lait) on 371 rue Villeneuve est. That is where Montée began life as a small bistro celebrating all things dairy (hence the namesake "cheese and milk"). But a concept can only take you so far in the restaurant business, especially one so limiting (Iron Chef can do it, but this isn't Kitchen Stadium). So, the menu was opened up, with a great success.

    The dining room in the carved stone building is a shining gem. The windows, brushed elegantly with white paint, tell the story of the two-room (with a third floor) space. It is serene and narrow, with polished tables and glistening mirrors adding respective touches of warmth to a suspiciously dull beige-coloured room. The starkness of the room is brightened by a curve-y cocktail bar.

    The menu is a bit confusing at first: Seemingly small plates arranged by price and weight, from lighter to more substantial, under cutely coined categories. If you don't want to go through this exercise, just go with the aforementioned seven-course chef's menu, which, considering the swell room and skilled staff, is considered a bargain for anywhere else in the world.

    Some of the dishes - Torch burnt mackerel with citrus and fennel salad, orange juice reduction and something called "This is not a bouillabaisse" (Halibut and clams in a saffron broth, pastis sorbet) - are wonderful, the execution dead on. And if you go the wine flights, the suggested pour for the former is light Sancerre 2007, Pascal Jolivet while a 2004, Dupéré-Barrera Côtes de Provence is paired with the latter.

    Lunch at La Montée,
    Friday March 5th 2010, 12:00

    Kicked off with:
    -Butternut squash velouté, Chorizo - Not too creamy, not too light but at ideal consistency. The work of tastes here was true genius: not only the taste of the velouté on it's own was exceptionally moving/daring/unique, but the tastebud wonder concerto was not going to end there: couple of tiny slices of deep flawlessly cooked flavored chorizo added a supreme smartly well thought smoky-ness. The slightly-cooked tasty pumkin seeds found in that velouté added an extra dimension of welcoming nutty flavors to this exceptional velouté. Excellent.
    -Roasted Salmon, Rapini, Padano chip - Generous flavorful chunk of tender and remarquably delicious piece of fresh salmon: seared on it's top, it was lightly cooked within paving the way to a well balanced ideal consistency in between not too firm and not mushy. Great precision in the cooking and remarquable work of the taste (The seafood keeping it's fully enjoyable natural deep flavor). The fresh rapinis were ideally sauteed Kudos for topping the overall with that elegant Padano cheese chip: it added a extra kick to an already excellent dish.
    Milky/Chocolate rice pudding/Pear Sorbet - Topped by layers of pears and Choco chips, the pudding was comforting (rice cooked at ideal crunchy-ness) + the quality of the chocolate is nice. Good.

    The La Montée that I found on my way on this Lunch was exceptionally perfect: Elegant/efficient and classy waitstaff, very courteous/attentive/accomodating service, daring/moving/outstanding food.

    After coming here again recently, it reconfirms how much we like this place. Parking still sucks but the food and service is still good!

    Le ontee is an above-average restaurant (great, quick service, big menu, decorated neatly) with just average food. I enjoyed my entire meal but nothing blew me away or was all that memorable. I would return for a light dinner, perhaps, but it's not going to be my first choice.

    Although pricey, the food at La Montee is simply a step above most restaurants.

    The atmosphere was fun, the crowd was older and very demanding. The hostess did her best to attend to the cranky, whiny crowd. Unfortunately the whinier people were seated before us after arriving late and after us. I guess it is easier to appease the complainers than attend to the pleasant. My fault, next time I'll yell at the hostess and get seated first. They did however offer free appetizers to keep us happy.

    I went here with my bf for our 3 year anniversary. I have to say that we were both disappointed with the food. We ordered Braised Short Rib Dumplings which we bought thought was pretty good. Their oysters were horrible-not fresh at all! Still, will not be coming back =(

    We did the seven course tasting here, and let me say, the proportions were big for a tasting. The whole table (there were 8 of us) were completely stuffed by the fourth course but we kept eating becuase it was out of this world. Rarely can I say that everyone at the table was gushing compliments to the chef, it was mouth watering and eye pleasing, absolutely unique and the service was spot on. The waiter asked us what preference for the seven course, and we noted seafood, he asked for our dislikes as well and none of that was included in our menu (yes, the seven course is specially created for your table by the chef). We had gastronomic oysters, delicate fish, popcorn soup, squid, duck and even foie gras - I would of paid more than TRIPLE the $65 price in Vancouver for a seven course tasting menu, moreover, the food was so good that I would of never known it could be at this price. A dining experience that I rate as one of the best I've ever had.

    During a recent visit, a great array of plates were presented for our gustatory inspection - a tasting menu of sorts. Which should did we like best? Hmmm, better have another plate.

    At La Montée, appetizers aren't just as elaborate as entrees, they're almost as big - at half the price of a full dinner. This is a great little restaurant.

    Nothing says fine dining like a restaurant at St Catherine and Bishop (gulp), but this was still an outstanding restaurant. Glad I braved it.

    Personally, I'm not the original La Montée, but the melt-in-your mouth freshness of the latest location and the creative display of their dishes won me over ..and I found myself slurping raw meat without a twitch. Words just won't do it justice.. so I'll post up pictures of the food. (I was surprised they let me take pictures!)

    Quite a fantastic experience. The food was as superb - even better, actually than it's previous location. The service is the best I have ever had, with remarkable attention to every request or dietary restriction. You can chose either a selection of 3 courses or a preselected list of 5 courses, which can be modified to suit your tastes. Quite expensive, but absolutely worth it.

    I was a tad disappointed with the fare especially after all of the high ratings it has been receiving. I didn't hate it, I just thought it would be more... special.

    A+ for food quality
    A++ for fun environment
    A+++ for service

    Very hip and appealing atmosphere located in somewhat of a dull Montreal intersection. The dishes I sampled had nice presentation and interesting flavors. La Montee could be located in Toronto or Los Angeles and easily stand up with the very best restaurants in town.

    Absolutely fantastic, unusual, creative, wonderful food. Great setting, and terrific service. And, as far as I'm concerned, the only reason to revisit St. Catherine and Bishp. Bouillabaisse was sublime, and the desserts exquisite.
