T he story behind the birth of Kitchenette is, yes, a love story. Owner and chef Nick Hodge was an unsuspecting Texas native, born and raised, who had nothing but southern sunshine on his horizon. The last thing he was planning to do was pick up and move to one of North America’s snowiest cities. He also wasn’t ready for that certain je ne sais quoi that French women possess. Like many men before him, Nick buckled at the knees and laid his heart out on a platter when he came across the lovely Nathalie. Then, bam! They were married and suddenly running this successful little gem of a bistro.
The family vibe oozes out of the walls at Kitchenette. Whether guests are warmly greeted by Nathalie’s jovial father, known to all as Papi, or enjoying a dessert freshly prepared by Loulou, Nathalie’s mum, they feel right at home. Nick heads up the kitchen while Nathalie puts her party-planning and catering experience to good use by handling menus and the administrative side of things. It puts diners at ease to know that they’re eating food prepared by the owner of the restaurant and that his entire family is chipping in to make their experience one of quality.
The focus at Kitchenette is on playfulness. The little spot does a brisk business lunch there, with CBC and Radio Canada right across the street. The Hodge’s work to provide an atmosphere that will cater to the neglected inner child in their hard-working clientele while also scintillating their refined foodie tastebuds. The constantly evolving table d`hote lunch dessert card is where the eatery’s playfulness comes through the most. Cupcakes are often included along with fun items like cappuccino sandwich cookies for customers` post-nosh delight. The atmosphere within the room is light and approachable, providing the 9-5 crowd with a venerable repose to unwind in at lunch or after work.
The lightheartedness does not mean that there is not a serious kitchen at Kitchenette, however. Rather, it’s quite to the contrary. Chef Nick Hodge has been around the block in catering and commercial kitchens in Montreal, refining his skill along the way. He is well-aware of his clientele and strives every day to prepare perfect dishes for their sophisticated tastes. His food is eclectic with fun presentations and playful garnishes. The grilled mahi mahi soft taco with pineapple and avocado-chipotle sour cream ($16) is a house favourite along with the Swiss Emmenthal grilled cheese sandwich with fresh baked ham ($9).
It is not an uncommon sight to see the Hodge’s discussing their selected wine list with their supplier friends, jostling a bit over which wine would pair the best with Nick’s famed Beef Bourguignon ($23). The prices of the wine are marked up much less then the industry standard to insure that guests can enjoy a bottle of quality vino to compliment their dish. The plates are inexpensive as well considering how developed they are.

We took a visiting Toronto friend for dinner Friday night, and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. The service was very good, as were both the appetizers and the main course; if anything I found the desserts a bit lacking, but still better than passable. I'd certainly go again; based on the wide variation in reviews, it may be a problem of consistency rather than competence.

Burned fish, wilted salad and screaming children.... need I say more.

Slow would be an understatement, given how long it took to get our food. To be fair, I was told it was one the rare times, that the owner wasn't there. My fish was dry and over-cooked, maybe that is what took so long.

What a find. The menu was very reasonably priced for Montreal. This is a great French bistro on René-Lévesque. The service can be a tad slow but it was ok. Food is great though.

While I don't agree with Mr. Richard's review, I am afraid that I can't share in the general enthusiasm about this restaurant. I recently ate there with a couple friends and found the experience lacking. I feel Kitchenette has become a victim of their own success. The staff seemed incapable of handling the number of clients in or arriving at the restaurant. The wait staff were literally dashing around and tried to keep up, but were outmatched. After waiting over long to order and receive our food, it was obvious the kitchen staff was equally pressed, as illustrated by; the terribly seasoned food, sloppy presentation and a poorly cooked beef filet. I don't want to judge a restaurant on just one experience, but it will be a while before I can get the taste of this one out of my mouth. And, yes the decor was lovely.

WE VISIT MONTREAL SEVERAL TIMES A YEAR AND AM ALWAYS LO0KING FOR NEW AND EXCITING RESTAURANTS. WE FOUND SUCH A RESTURANT - THE KITCHENETTE.
THE FOOD IS MODERATELY PRICED, THE SERVICE IS IMPECABLE. HAVING VISITED THE RESTURANT TWICE WE FOUND CONSISTENT HIGH QUALITY WHEREIN THE FOOD IS PREPARED WITH GREAT CARE AND THE FOOD IS SERVED HOT DIRCETLY OUT OF THE OPEN KITCHEN. TABLES ARE WELL SPACED ALLEVIATING EXCESSIVE NOISE.
ON THE LIST TO REVISIT WHEN NEXT IN MONTREAL.

Antonio Bernard obviously has issues. This restaurant is a gem compared to the rising number of resto/bar/clubs in the Montreal area. The service was relaxed, yet efficient and friendly, the food creative and delicious, and the atmosphere very relaxing. I would recommend this restaurant hands down!! Actually my only critique was allowing Bernard to ever eat there. This food should be reserved for those that have a respect for good food and the ambience that comes along with it. Bravo Kitchenette!!!

I've actually been a few times. Not bad at all. I don't know what "Antonion's" problem is. Disgruntled employee?

What a gem!! We love the food, we had the ribs which might have been the best we ever had.
The service was excellent, friendly and thoughtful.
A little extra for those interested, they make a point to use sustainable fish.
We will be going back!

Definitely my latest coup-de-coeur... and that's a lot for me to say (I've been called a food snob by my friends time and time again.) From the second I stepped in I felt right.
The staff is perfectly balanced between making you feel at home and the perfect customer.
The food is simply delicious... I could die for the mixed mushroom tartelette (which I can not avoid under any circumstances) and the ribs, which are not on the menu, but you should consider yourself lucky enough if you find them as the daily special.
And I always stay for a few extra drinks after supper: a great eclectic mix of music!
In a city where most restaurants pretend to be, Kitchenette simply is awesome!

Had a great time in this new local spot. The place was half-full and the staff was fine-tuned. Nice change from the other stuffy area restaurants.
