istorically, St. Jacques has been known more for prostitutes than restaurants, but thanks to our dear friend gentrification, this is all changing. The time has come for middle class folk to claim the area. The junkies and character are out. Starbucks outlets and mediocrity are in. New Stores and restaurants are popping up all over the street. Kagopa is one of the first spots to open on the strip and it serves rather pleasant and authentic Korean cuisine.
The interior is simple, but clean. New, but industrial dining tables line the walls along with a large flatscreen TV blasting kitschy Korean television programs that would make Kim Jong-Il wet his pants with laughter. The décor might not much, but the food is pretty delicious. Dishes like soondae, bibimbap, and cabbage kimchi that are guaranteed to satisfy the spring roll loving masses. But, don't expect food that is artfully presented on a plate. These are simple dishes made with flavor valued above all else. Your tongue will sing with delight even if your eyes are disappointed.
This is a neighborhood restaurant and a good one. The kitchen staff won't be earning any awards any time soon, but they will consistently win over new customers. The food is reasonably priced and magically delicious, so Kagopa certainly worth a visit. It might not be the nicest neighborhood to wonder through at 4:00am, but thanks to Kagopa a mid-day stroll through St. Jacques just got a little more pleasant. –P.B.
