What we know as Italian cuisine may be dedicated to revealing produce at its best, but co-owners Aniello Covone and Tony de Rose go after nature with blowtorches and microtomes and dynamite, determined to bend the old lady to their will.

A sliver of tomato may be less a sliver of a vegetable than a wisp in a spaghetti sauce, a salted crunch of thyme traces the shape of a curl of pan-seared tuna. An antipasti del Mulino and Tuna Carpaccio are must-try plates. Also on tap: Risotto ai Porcini, Osso Buco con Risotto and Roasted Baby Goat.

Book a table for a self-contained dining experience; located in the heart of Little Italy, Il Mulino is small, cute and yet, has a capacity of about 60. Follow Boul St-Laurent north, turn right on St-Zotique, Ristorante Il Mulino is located right on the corner of rue Alma.

Bring a big appetite and a credit card and let this restaurant have its way with you. - A.J.

We went back to this restuarant last July. This was our 2nd visit to this restaurant. The first time, I believe it was owned by a different owner. On the 1st visit, my husband said his meal was excellent. My wasn't so excellent.

The 2nd visit I thought overall the food was much better. The waiter/owner suggested an anti-pasta appetizer. It was pretty good overall, but we weren't given a price. We then had a middle course of pasta. I assumed that the price of this would be what it would cost for one pasta dish, but just split between my husband and me. Then we had the main course and some wine. When we go out we always buy "mid-level" wine--never the most expensive and never the cheapest. It was sooo espensive--over $400 Candian dollars. The US dollar and the Candian dollar were almost the same amount at this time--I believe we got 94 cent Candian for our US dollar. Although the food and wine were great, it was way too expensive for us to ever return to this cozy little restaurant. We never spent this much on a meal--not even in NYC or LA, 2 of the more expensive US cities.

    Appetizers were amazing. Unbelievable.
Service from waiter was top-notch except we weren't offered a price on the custom order of appetizers after we explained that we couldn't read the Italian menu. We didn't ask either. We also weren't offered a price on the wine when I suggested we didn't want to break the bank on wine. Again, we didn't ask.

We were three people. Each of us had an appetizer, a main course and dessert. There were five glasses of wine served from a bottle of modest wine. At least that's what we asked for. We don't know much about wine either.

As I said, the appetizers were incredible. The wine was very good.
Two of the main courses were sub-par. Quite bad actually. I had the guinea fowl stuffed with Prociutto and cheese. Provolone I think. It was too much like a frozen dinner and the meat was tough. The skin was like armour. The mashed potatoes were good but nothing special. The salt cod main course was lack lustre. It was woody and tasted like fish with soy sauce.

So, if you go to the Il Mulino web site you will see that they claim that the average cost for a full course dinner is between 40 and 60 dollars excluding wine.

I would like to know then how we got a bill for $368.00 CDN

    I feel ripped off.
