But neither can Simo (Adrien Brody), a semi-sleazy private eye who worms his way into investigating what might not have been a suicide. He gets a tip from a colleague that Reeves' mother believes her son was murdered, and he sneaks into her confidence by garnering publicity for the theory. But the closer he gets to what he believes is the truth, the more dangerous his situation becomes. But he drinks too much, exasperates his ex-wife (Molly Parker) and is unprepared to deal with the problems of his son (Zach Mills).
In Flashbacks, the movie shows how trapped Reeves was: He hated role his job as Superman, which was procured for him by a Toni, and was pigeon-holed by his fans so he couldn't find new work. And shortly before his death, he actually broke up with Toni and became engaged to a younger woman.
Possible suspects begin to line up: Reeves could have been murdered, either by his fiancée (Robin Tunney), who also had motive due to a lover's spat; or on the behalf of his jilted lover, the wife of one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. Toni could have done it out of jealousy; or it really could have been suicide. After all, Reeves' career was over. Faced with the prospect of a slide into obscurity, he probably did shoot himself.
As for the film, if you've never really cared for Ben Affleck, then Hollywoodland is a good time to start. At times, it feels like he's playing himself, a go-getting actor wanting desperately to be taken seriously, but held back by tabloid purgatory.
