From the team that created Marché 27, comes Greasy Spoon on Laurier. Staffed with a chef formerly of DNA and Time Supper Club -- back when the food was good -- expectations are high.

Vibrant and lively, Greasy Spoon's (aka The Spoon) bright dining room has fifty or so seats, almost all occupied by mid-20s to mid-30s patrons dressed in anything from hoodies to shirts and ties, frilly dresses to jeans and t-shirts.

The dining room reflects the cuisine being mixed up behind the kitchen window. Stools at elevated tables look like cut-off logs, the tables and bar are made of distressed wood, the shelving behind the bar is a bunch of stacked wine crates, and there's a moose head hanging across from the entrance. This place screams fresh, market cuisine.

Before looking at the menu, my friend and I agreed that wine was in order. The wine list was far from overwhelming. Wines by the glass were scarce: Inniskilin and Mission Hill (both Canadian) in their red and white incarnations respectively. The Mission Hill Merlot is a great wine from B.C., but I would have liked a larger selection of varietals to complement my meal. The list by the bottle ranged from $40 - $120 and did not have the depth I would have expected from a mid-range market concept on Laurier. At any rate, we settled on a bottle and moved on to more important matters: solid food.

Perusing the menu while sitting at the bar, numerous items piqued our interest: trout tartar, sautéed mushrooms with parmesan, chicken poutine, Cornish hen, rib steaks, and the usual suspects of market salads. The inspiring sights and smells emanating from the kitchen made selection a little difficult. Furthermore, the oyster and lobster bar at the left end of the bar didn't make choosing easier. In a nutshell, there are a number of very tasty options to consider. Apps start at $8 and mains range $18-$31.

I 100% agree with the review below that any joint with the owner submitting his own review is to be avoided. Same goes for all the doctored reviews from his(their) friend(s). It's pretty obvious which reviews are genuine and which aren't.

The food was good. The staff was half assed - definitely not knowledgeable. The music and decor are good.

If, and I emphasize IF, this place survives, it has a lot of issues to smooth out to justify the price point. In the mean while, A L'Os, Tredici 13, L'Atelier, Assomoir and a host of other great places are in very close proximity and offer great options.

Greasy Spoon gets one star because of how much it cost, and one star for being so unambiguously foul that I am not left pondering whether to ever go back or not. It also gets one star for the owner writing his own review (review #12). Avoid.

Let me tell you something, the food, while not bad, is not great at all. They even messed up part of my order. The atmosphere is what it is, however, and that's not a compliment. Eat elsewhere. That's my suggestion.

Hmmmm....Feeling out some of the mixed reviews, I tried the restaurant out for myself since I knew the was an affiliation with Marché 27, a restaurant where I like to dine regularly. I really like the ambiance at Greasy Spoon. The staff was very knowledgeable & dressed to fit the decor & theme. Once I received my entrees, I had to try all four others on the daily menu. I'm a huge oyster connaisseur, and their selection was excellent for a restaurant of that size. As a main course I went with the Duck Confit Poutine, which ended up being an amazing choice. I had the chance to taste my dates Grilled Skate Wing Filet. It was probably one of the better white fish dishes I've had in a while. In conclusion, I believe I've been back to Greasy Spoon ten times since their opening. I would recommend it to pretty much anyone who wants a great time with great food, who doesn't mind the louder and more vibrant atmosphere.

Vivie-Ann and Miss Smith... and all these other posts are all the same person! We were at Greasy Spoon and was highly disappointed. Many kinks to work out, and amateurism in the kitchen was abundant.

I was reluctant to try Greasy Spoon, because I was deterred by the original, mediocre review by our juiced-up hockey fan! Nevertheless, I decided to bite the bullet and give it a try. And am I glad I did! The ambiance, the staff, the decor, and of course the food, more than made up for a chilly, sub-zero Sunday night.
I like my meat very tender, and my braised lamb was literally falling away from the bone with one slight touch of the knife. Was it the braising or the Dr. Pepper that resulted in such a tender treat for the palate??? I will certainly ask the chef the next time I go back, because without a doubt, I will be returning to Greasy Spoon with my husband, a dedicated carnivore who is a die-hard lover of lamb!

P.S. By the way, the wall mount is definitely NOT a moose-head!

Pardon me? Can someone tell me where I can find "Beats"? I have only been able to locate "Beets" at Jean Talon market.

Come on, a writer who admits that he was "heavy on beer" while reviewing the restaurant? Right, like that's professional!

    Paul,

I disagree with you. The fact that the menu is on a chalk board implies that it changes regularly - there is no print, nothing stagnant! On top of that the reviewer liked the concept, the food and gave the joint the thumbs up. I found the article had a positive tone and the writer even suggests that he would return!

Got a chip on your shoulder?

I dine here frequently and have chatted with the owner on several occasions, and this review really does not do Greasy Spoon justice. The writer neglects to mention the owner's business concept (that the restaurant serves an entirely new menu every day), got their chef and owner info wrong, and even mistook a caribou's head for a moose head. I hope that in the future, Martini Boys will try harder to retain their credibility as a restaurant resource by hiring writers who do the proper research before writing their reviews.
