  • Graziella

    Desmond Carter
This restaurant is embracing the current trend of comfort foods made classy through top-quality ingredients and slow cooking processes. Housed behind a large black door, in an old stone building, Graziella may look old on the outside, but the interior is pure modern minimalism at its finest. Chef Graziella Battista moved her restaurant to this new location on McGill Street, which seems far more apropos than when Battista was running the now-defunct, slightly-tacky Il Sole on St. Laurent.

Since migrating, Battista’s food – which was already highly-acclaimed by critics all over town – has only got better. The Italian food here is genuinely authentic, so those looking for East Side Marios’-esque meals should head elsewhere. Appetizers include seared scallops glistening in olive oil or seared tuna served with a Pugliese sauce and garnished with rosemary and citrus peel. As for the mains, sumptuous dishes like red-wine risotto, ricotta gnocchi, and prosciutto-stuffed pork chop.

Make sure you save some room for dessert, too. Battista serves up deliciously decadent post-dinner treats, like pears layered with mascarpone cream, a custard tart loaded with flan, pannacotta topped with a spicy red coulis, and a velvety chcocolate cake topped with fresh raspberries. All in all, it’s heaven for those with a penchant for glucose.

With excellent service, delicious food and a great atmosphere, Graziella wins on all accounts. This restaurant is a must-try, so go now – just don’t eat beforehand.

My husband and I ate there for the 1st time on Friday, May 16, 2008 and will never go back.

Upon arrival, the maitre d' looked at us with a blank stare and we felt immediately uncomfortable. We eat at restaurants in the old port daily and we have never had such a cold reception. The overall service was long and pitiful. We had to remind the waitress to bring us pepper and parmesan half way through our entrees and main course as it seemed to be difficult for her to remember on her own.

I ordered a tomato salad to start, and was served a cucumber salad with 2 small tomatoes instead. Ok, I kept an open mind all the same. As a main course, I initially ordered a steak medium / well done, but I was told that under no circumstances would they serve me it that way. So much for customer service. After a slight argument, both of us ordered the gnocchi, which arrived over cooked and in what seemed to be a liquidy tomatoe soup. We complained to both the waitress and the maitre d after we paid, and we were escorted out of the restaurant and were told not to come back. No problem there I said! I didn't intend to ever return.

Overall,I would never suggest this place to anyone, and would have to say it was one of the worst meals I ever had in a restaurant.

The most incredible food - unfortunately with the most incredible bad service.
Service IS important as noone likes to sit in front of dirty dishes for 30 minutes.

I just had a very satisfying meal at Graziella's. Two huge scallops as an apetizer, cooked to perfection ! The beef carpaccio just literally melted in you're mouth. The ricotta gnocchi was served in fresh tomato sauce. The three pieces of pork belly where delicious. The food was very flavourful and yet delicate, like the Barbaresco we had to accompany eavrything.

I am a good eater because I play a lot of sports and I can say that all the dishes where generous amounts. I don't see why some comments on this site complain of portion size.

I really liked the ambiance, nice size crowd, mix of people, not too loud.

Just went there last night after reading a decent review in the gazette a few weeks ago. I will never go back to this place ever again. Although the taste of the food was ok, the size of the portions were absolutely ridiculous. I ordered a pasta as my main course and could not believe that they had the nerve to serve something something so small. It was less then an appetizer portion. For $24 they should have at least served a decent size portion of pasta. Did not even want to waste my time ordering dessert. I was with 3 other people and all shared the same opinion. We all went for pizza right after. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE IF YOU ARE REMOTELY HUNGRY!

Last night, my wife and I ate at this restaurant with another couple. We had read a good review in the Montreal Gazette which inspired us to try it out.

Please know that there is a reason that great restaurants can charge big prices and those that aren't great but charge big prices go out of business. This one is the latter.

The restaurant itself is nice but the service leaves much to be desired - it took forever before a piece of bread hit the table and even longer to get a drink order filled.

The food was good, however, the portions were ridiculously small, especially for the price. I've been to restaurants that give small portions but this was beyond reasonable logic. The scallop appetizer consisted of two tiny scallops for $12 and the raviolli main course, while tasty, consisted of 10 small raviolis for $30. If that sounds like the rip off of the century, consider that my friend ordered the strazetti pasta which sent the table into shock when it appeared on the table in a bowl that was fit to deliver appetizers in for $25. To put it in perspective, my two year old son would have left this restaurant hungry.

After dinner, we all went for pizza… seriously.

I have eaten in many of the finer establishments in Montreal and can say that when you go somewhere like Joe Beef, for example, they give you a fair portion for the price. Furthermore, when brought to the attention of the waiter and manager, they laughed and said you need to get used to this. What a joke. Any semi-decent restaurant wouldn't hesitate to try to satisfy an unhappy customer. When you charge prices like that you need to be vigilant about meeting customer expectations and satisfying reasonable complaints. This place makes no such attempts, in fact they laugh. I’m sure the manager will be eating out of a dumpster again in a few months.

Based on service, portion size and especially ATTITUDE, I would never return to this place. There are so many great restaurants in this city - don't waste your time and money on this dump.

After reading the exciting review for Graziella by A.J Kinik I decided to try this resto out with my companion on Mar 3 for a late lunch.

My enthusiasm for Graziella quickly evaporated the moment we opened the door at approx 2:30PM. Instead of feeling welcomed we received a glare from the server/host, no inviting smile or greeting, just a stare and an abrupt, "for two". There was a large group sitting in the front of the restaurant and vacant tables across from them but we were placed in the middle section near the noisy kitchen. Our gracious host did not ask or provide an option as to where we would like to sit and my companion spoke up and stated that the front was preferred. We were relocated and once seated my companion had to interrupt our server/host's departure and ask for a mineral water at which point our server/host turned away from the table without asking what I would like. This only prompted another stare at which point I said I was not interested in a beverage.

We ordered the lunch special and both had the pea soup, with my companion ordering the sausage and the gnocchi for myself. I found the pea soup watery for a pea soup but tasty non the less. The kicker was when my gnocchi arrived. It had a small piece of copper wire sticking out of one of the dumplings. I flagged our server and she took it with her back to the kitchen returning momentarily to explain that it was from the pasta strainer. Now, this wire could have caused me to choke or chip a tooth if I had not noticed it before taking it and the dumpling into my mouth. The server asked if I wanted to replace the plate. For some reason, I decided to complete the meal feeling that the pasta strainer was probably not some copper abraisive used to clean dishes and she confirmed that it was sanitary.

I did however expect a discount or free coffee or dessert and upon receiving the bill found that non was offered(A similar situation happened to me years ago and I and my mother were provided two free meals as an apology and show of appreciation for our patronage). I spoke to the manager and explained how enthused we were, based on the review, to try his restaurant and that the copper wire could have caused serious problems and he simply apologized. Our apology for our dismal experience was reflected in our tip and I will never return or recommend Graziella to anyone.

Food is one thing but atmosphere and service that is subpar can quickly deflate one's appetite. In stark contrast to Graziella, the service, food and atmosphere at Psarotaverna Du Symposium Restaurant where we dined the night before is impecable.

    Best regards,
    Sean
