uropea, which has been open since 2002, remains true to their original French-twist dishes that are art forms in themselves. The chef Jerome Ferrer (who is quite handsome, I must add) prides himself on unique dishes that taste as good as they look. Europea, which is located in the semi-basement of two old brick houses, is a true attest to exceptional Montreal-French cuisine.
The inside of the resto is natural and simple, which is a good sign. I tend to be suspicious of overly-made up restaurants- they’re like a woman with too much make up on. You never know what you’re actually going to get when the façade falls- all you’ll have left is a plate of bad tasting mush (or a 65 year old woman beside you in the morning). The chairs have crisp, white slipcovers that offer elegance and charm, while the dark blue plates set a stark contrast to the prim and proper. The resto features interesting abstract paintings, which are perfect for distracting yourself with as you listen to your date drone on about their last break up. But perhaps the best part is the strict adhesion to tradition and exceptional service- Europea will ensure you’re treated like royalty.
The tasting menu offers interesting selections that you most likely will never see again. For example, try the Pentoncle Geant et Homard, which is scallops and lobster with Jerusalem artichoke and coriander salad. Or, give the Cerf a go- pan seared venison chop stuffed with parmesan cheese. If you’re already starting to salivate, let me sweeten the deal- picture a halibut filet with creamy polenta and vanilla-flavoured butter sauce. This most certainly will have you scraping your plate clean- just avoid licking it, please. This is a classy French restaurant!
For dessert, Europea offers my favourite dish- white chocolate parfait. The resto also puts a spin on boring ravioli- try chocolate ravioli with suzette caramel and orange zest. Or, if you’re just too stuffed, give the wine pairing a try (A selection of 4 glasses of wine for $55).
If someone asks you how your trip to Europea was, you’ll more than likely have oodles to say. Very few restaurants maintain the traditional French cooking styles, along with top-notch service. You’ll begin to wonder why you’ve settled for less- lets just hope this revelation doesn’t lead to a mid-life crisis.
