or ten years, the space was called Sofa; with this new look, it's been renamed Chesterfield. Yeah, there are a lot of puns about changing sofas on their website. Designed by Hugo Gagnon, the joint now has modern lines, grey with pink accents.
Although they only opened at the end of October, 2008, already the joint is busy and hard to get into – and for good reason.
The four owners, Francis Dumais, Franco Parreira, Yanouk Poirier, and Jacques Trottier, basically believe that this whole buying-a-whole-bottle of wine thing is over. So they are putting more by-the-glass options on the menu – including some Grand Cru wines! – so that people can taste a wider variety. (While a Grand Cru bottle is out of my budget, a glass might be within it. This makes me very happy.)
The wine list is divvied up into red and white, of course, but also in sub-sections describing the wines; reds are fruity and fresh, or elegant, or coarse and structured; whites are refreshing, or mineral-y, or aromatic.
Refreshing whites that caught my eye include an Italian Veneto Bianco IGT San Vincenzo 2007, Anselmi; an Alsace, Riesling 2006, Hugel; France, VDP, Sauvignon Blanc Attitude, Pascal Jolivet; and an Australian Sauvignon Blanc 2008, Adelaide Hills, Shaw and Smith. Under the mineral list, I liked the look of the Italian Saint Antime Grance 2004, Tenuta Caparzo; the France, PUligny-Montrachet 2005, Marc Morey; and the Australian Chardonnay Black Dog Creek 2006, Vicotria, Buller.
