popped by Cherry to satisfy my growing curiosity after mention upon mention of the now-trademark inebriating club nights have come up in casual conversation. I really had no choice but to jump in, only to be wildly entertained 'til the wee hours of the morning. The generous libations kept tongues wagging so I managed to get a generous scoop.
Cherry, located in Old Montreal, has been getting consistently great reviews from club kids, house heads and pop-in patrons alike. This is most likely a result of the industry-inspired vibe of the place. Since its opening, Cherry has become a venerable DJ hang-out hub. With big names like Jojo Flores, Misayo, Ja Big, Junior Vasquez, Ian Friday, Arnold Jarvis, Mighty Kat, John Creamer, Stephane K. - and more! - spinning on the regular, even the busboys at Cherry are aspiring DJs. Not to mention that Therapy, Montreal’s famous house night, has changed its residence and set up shop in the windowless basement bar.
The decor at Cherry is laid back and very sexy. The red leather booths that line one wall provide a degree of intimacy that very few clubs can accomplish, but you can only sit there if you order a bottle. The notorious Sketch Room is off to the side and looks like its eponymous name. It is a raw room with writing on the walls and a DJ set up all the way at the back where there is also a small room with a door that locks from the inside. Needless to say, quite a few stories have been spun by club patrons about the privacy of that particular room. As a house policy, the DJs in the Sketch Room can spin whatever they like as long as it isn’t their usual set, and the more eclectic the better.
Cherry is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and occasionally throughout the week for those in-the-know. Memorable parties that have been thrown there so far include a 24-hour opera called Spanish Bordello with famed drag queen Anthony Lamont. The wrap parties for the Punisher sequel and the Showcase series Webdreams were also held at Cherry. The odd swinger shindig and a fetish night here and there also grace the bill.
