It all come down to that tricky “i” before “e” when distinguishing between the Brasserie Holder – a wonderful addition to the French dining scene – or a Brassiere – a female undergarment that holds up the breasts. A selection of traditional brasserie favourites, including mussels and fries, Niçoise salad, beef bourguignon and steak tartar, are staples on the menu. What was once an old Bank of Montreal building (that I’m sure had a fair share of hold ups), the wide open space and high ceilings don’t go to waste as the matching floor to ceiling windows (overlooking McGill) make for excellent people watching. Catering to the after work crew looking to loosen up with libations and a delicious dinner, the Holder can help many a hard worker out. An excellent place to mix and mingle with member of the opposite sex.

I have had many great nights at Holder. The salmon tartar rivals the best in the city, and the shoestring fries are impossible to put down. I've sat at the bar a few times and the staff has always been attentive, interesting, and an integral part of the great experience. The wine list also offers a number of choices for those in the $40-$50 range.

Living in Old Montreal, this restaurant really is a staple for me. And if you show up without a reservation, just sit at the bar. You won't have to wait and it's an equally appealing choice.

This was my third visit here, because the previous two were so good and memorable. This time was a let down. Fusion cooking alive and well! The hostess was great, but the server all but disappeared after we expressed reservations about the calamari appetizer. He barely swung by to drop off the check just moments after we asked for.

We had a reservation for 12 people for 10:00. We were not giver our table until 10:30. Then they gave us a group menu, which was reduced version of the main menu. The waiter said that if we knew what was on the main menu we could order, but he would not show us the menu. So, my wife went to front to see the main menu. He saw her and told her "you cannot see the main menu" , and "don't cause any problems".

Finally, when we started ordering from the abridged menu, which did not more than 4 main dishes, we were told they had ran out of some of the dishes.

In the end, at 11:10, all 12 of us got up and left.

    Terrible, NEVER going back there!!!
