  • Balls of Fury

    Sep. 1, 2007 - Aaron Jacobs

So our pudgy, sweet-natured slacker gets a shot at redeeming himself and a chance to exact revenge on the man who killed Randy’s father. But Randy is way out of shape, so he must undergo a rigorous training regimen with a blind Ping-Pong master named Master Wong (scene-stealer James Hong) and his sexy niece student Maggie (Maggie Q, who appeared in Live Free or Die Hard) in order to make it to Feng’s mysterious compound to play in a disturbingly unique Ping-Pong tournament.

Directed by Thomas Lennon and written by Ben Garant (Night at the Museum), Balls of Fury is at once a hilarious and lame movie, but seemingly inoffensive if you overlook some breaches of political correctness and an unhealthy focus on shots to the groin.

Fogler - a comic actor in the tradition of John Belushi and Jack Black, but not as sarcastic - brings a winning enthusiasm to the role. And in the Okey-dokey artichokey corner, a wildly campy Christopher Walken is amusing as the supervillain Feng in a flowing purple geisha robe and a bad wig. Unfortunately, Balls of Fury is as silly as they come and loses its sense of humor as it gets more desperate to find its way to the end.
