Paul Stuart Tie Bar
By Desmond Carter
t’s true that all that glitters is not gold; it can be sterling silver instead. Speaking of which, this precious metal is surging in popularity once again. Gold may be the metal of the moment, but silver has proven time and time again that it has a classic appeal which makes it a wise addition to any collection. If your wardrobe is in need of some luster, check out the latest accessory that every man should own; the tie bar.
The tie bar is a classic American accessory with a decidedly British dandy air to it. It was popularized by the always-put-together actor Fred Astaire, who served as a fashion icon to men everywhere during his time. Notably, Astaire wore his tie bars on a downward angle – as opposed to horizontally – in order to add some modernity to what was once only worn as part of very formal dress by aristocratic Brits.
Paul Stuart is currently selling some very stylish – and affordable – tie bars that will have your neck piece staying firmly in place. This blue-blooded haberdashery carries the popular Silver Engine Turned tie bar ($49.50), which is a classic, rectangular tie bar with some subtle detailing. It’s a safe option for those who are new to the tie bar scene and want to ease in gently. For the more daring and avant-garde, there’s the Silver Propeller ($64.50), which looks like a helicopter blade adorning your tie and is far more playful. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I’m sure that Air Force vets will be flocking to Paul Stuart to relive their glory (or not so glorious?) days.
Embrace the revival of this old-school accessory in all its gallantness. Even if a trek into PS or Brooks Brothers seems far too mature for you, just do as the hipsters do and modify the implementation. It’s all about how you implement accessories, so make it your own and be as cool – or staid – as you want to be. Now wasn’t that diplomatic?
So, whether you’re a suit-wearing professional or a frequenter of charity galas, your suit speaks for you. A limp, crooked tie will make others think you’re fresh out of the ‘hab*. For those with a weakness with abbreviations, I’m referring to rehab, since just about everyone and their uncle seems to be heading in or out of there lately. Even homely Kirsten Dunst has checked herself in – what is the world coming to? Sidebars aside, the tie bar not only keeps your tie hanging straight and narrow, but it also gives it a needed lift to defy the blandness that gravity brings upon all of us. Knot up and slide one on. | Paul Stuart Tie Bar

1 Reader ReviewsPaul Stuart no longer makes a sterling tie bar that is engine turned across the entire front. I just called them yesterday. They do make one with an initials window and it costs $69.50 now.
