he 7th annual Miami International Wine Fair is about to take place and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever. Be warned though-the whole weekend might turn into an ego-fest between the wine connoisseurs and the people who don't care what they are drinking, as long as there's alcohol in it. There are 1,200 wines from 15 countries available for people to taste, and the grounds cover more than 65,000 square feet. If you know your wine then you will know what booths to head to. If you don't know your wine, there are seminar programs to explain everything from 'The Rhone Valley vs. The Rhone Rangers' to 'Spain vs. the Rest of the World.' These seminars are damn expensive, so try to brush up a little before you head out and maybe you can skip them and just speak to the many wine experts that will be present. The Collectors' Club is a separate section where there are featured wines that are not found in other parts of the wine fair. Basically you pay more money, you feel important and you get drunk of damn good wine. The guided tasting seminars are perfect to brush up on your wine knowledge in record time. It's just not fun reading about these wines in a book- if you like the 'hands-on' approach there's no better way to do your homework. Expect to hear words like Aficionado, sommelier, vino, connoisseur, pallet and fermentation all weekend long. But that's wine snobbery for you. The bottom line is if you enjoy wine, regardless of the type, cost or label, then don't miss out on the largest wine expo in Florida. A.C.
