    Lift

Lift isn't romantic in the traditional way, but dining on a foundation inches above the Pacific Ocean certainly wets more than just the appetite (zing!). The stunning design features an open concept fireplace, Coal Harbour vista, and backing mountains. With a room this nice, the waiters could serve dog food and your Valentine’s companion would still be impressed. Fortunately, you won’t have to worry about that. The chef specializes in seasonal flavours with a hint of spice that are always a treat for the palate. Lift is a date spot of the highest order. The aroma of the chef’s seasonal flavours mix with the seaside air to set a very appetizing and romantic mood. With a magnificent view, stunning ambiance, and delectable food, Lift beats baguettes, cheese, handwritten cards, flowers, and message hearts every time. But it can’t compare with those grade school cartoon character Valentine’s Day cards. They represent the height of contemporary romance. 333 Menchion Mews, 604-689-5438

    Lumiere

For a traditional starry-eyed meal and evening, Lumiere is luminescent (sorry). Providing the requisite Valentine’s Day combination of refined elegance and intense passion, Lumiere allures. The lighting is dim, the ambiance is chic, the menu is pricey, and the clientele is double-breasted and refined. Executive chef Rob Feenie's classically innovative cuisine only enhances the mood provided by the décor. After all, romance comes easily when noshing on pan seared foir gras and grilled scallop layered with BBQ duck broth or English pea ravioli and sage brown butter sauce. French and aphrodisiacal with a local contingent, the fare simultaneously conjures familiarity and boasts innovation: illuminating (again, sorry). 2551 West Broadway, 604-739-8185

    Nu

As time goes on, Nu is gradually becoming wider recognized and no longer boasts that hip unknown dining quality. But it has an esoteric, anti-quotidian feel that will earn you in-the-know points with any Valentine’s Day date. The stunning seaside view is sure to impress, as will the limestone and marble-accentuated space. The restaurant drips with class, so even if you don’t have any your date will probably assume you do by association. Nu's culinary strength rests in its mains, particularly the satisfying Caramelized Lamb Cheeks ($24.10) with sides of minted radishes and mashed potatoes. Other winners include the Baked Halibut ($20) paired with pork-and-potato hash and an aggressive sherry veal reduction. If you’re planning on having a solo V-day and are rather disgusted by the whole holiday, then Nu even has an event for you. On the 15th the restaurant will be hosting an Anti-Valentine’s Day Singles Night Party. You’ll be able to get your cynical, loveless drink on with plenty of like-minded lonely-hearts.

    Ocean Club

Because the term "Surf and Turf" evokes rather unromantic images of hefty deal-seeking diners gorging on happy hour specials at chain restaurants, Ocean Club has split its menu into Earth and Ocean. That’s cheating, but at least they’ve made an effort. With a vast and diverse menu, Ocean Club will please even the pickiest date. Mains range from Mac and Cheese (a Valentine’s Day classic) to Squash Tortellini and Oysters. An extensive wine list composed of marvelous vintages and pleb stink grapes will wash those delectable dishes down in style. The Ocean Club is accessible and chic, neither breaking the bank nor disappointing the raised February 14th standards. Suite 105, 100 Park Royal, 604-926-2326
