I was in Chicago for three hours in 2002. My friend and I left the airport briefly. It was fittingly windy. I did not get shot. I neither sang nor danced. I felt slightly cheated. In Chicago the musical, Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart prove that 1920s women's prisons were like cabaret bars, but with a bigger chance of post-release success. Singing and dancing ensue. A couple of people get shot, but it's not very windy. The grass is always greener... Playing at Arsht Center from tonight, May 26th through the end of the month, this touring version of the Broadway stalwart features Sofia Vergara as Mama Morton. Expect musical murder, high leg kicks, smooth talking lawyers, and an inherent meditation on fame. -S.T.
