“We’re just trying to bring some soul back into nightlife,” Carey said. That means creating a place where there are “no pretensions at all, where it is all about the party and the energy and the soul.” Carey says the club wants to evoke the spirits of Bob Dylan and Jack Kerouac.

Just getting its soulful feet off the ground, The Vagabond sprang into existence hosting private parties and Winter Music Conference events, with top acts like John Digweed and Louie Vega spinning in the house. Did we mention Digweed is one of the Vagabond’s owners? He is. So is Carmel Ophir, who brought parties such as Back Door Bamby to South Beach for years. Also in on the club is Rodney Mayo, who owns South Beach spots Blue and Lost Weekend as well as several West Palm Beach nightspots.

But don’t think The Vagabond aims to please only the ultra-cool, rich and famous. On most nights, there won’t even be a cover charge. “We're not big with covers,” said Frank Mandango, The Vagabond’s doorman. And what is a Vagabond without his booze? There are three bars to sidle up to at The Vagabond, and the prices aren’t half-bad, especially considering the music and décor. Most drinks are in the $7.00 range. A mini bottle of bubbly can be had for $12.

Joey Stella, a tie-wearing bartender with a black mop-top, says The Vagabond is already attracting wandering crowds of hipsters, rockers, emos and artists—basically the sort of people you might bump into during a night of gallery-hopping in Wynwood. The Vagabond takes over the space I/O, one of the first venues to open in Overtown, inhabited for years. The new owners hope to keep I/O’s pioneering spirit alive with a three-night lineup. Thursdays are Money Shot nights where hip-hop-leaning lines are spun. Friday nights bring Lola from Miami’s Sweat Records to party with her rock and roll mixes. And Saturdays are for the older classics of the 1970s and ‘80s. It should be stated that the Vagabond is still finding its way and the lineup is likely to change in the near future.
