always knew that Lenny Kravitz was a man of many talents, although interior designer never popped into mind. Alas, the four-time Grammy Award-winning artist has proven he has an eye for design with his hand in the Delano Hotel’s newest watering hotel, The Florida Room.
Kravitz’s design company, aptly/boringly called Kravitz Design, teamed up with Morgans Hotel Group to create the Delano’s opulent piano lounge that instantly evokes swinging 20’s. A large Lucite grand piano acts as the centerpiece and wisely blends the classicism of a piano with the modernism inherent in Kravitz’s designs. It’s set underneath a smoky mirrored ceiling that exudes romance and elegance. Kravitz
also designed a large chandelier – composed of Swarovski crystals, nonetheless – that hangs in the centre of the room, directly above the bar. Needless to say, you won’t have any trouble finding your way to the bar to seek a refill on your drink. Speaking of which, the bar features plenty of alcohol, including 30 unique cocktails that draw heavily on Cuban ingredients (think rum).
Since it’s opening, the Florida Room has been abuzz with classy parties and plenty of celebrities. Jamie Foxx took to the Lucite piano and tickled the ivories, as did Kravitz (what a showboat…no, I’m kidding). Lance Armstrong has also popped up and partied the night away, exercising the freedom that comes from not having to train 25 hours a day anymore. The piano itself will attract numerous entertainers and live entertainment acts, and the bar also plans to host renowned DJs who keep things jumping far after the cigar-and-brandy crowd retires to their suites.
Whether you’re a fan of Kravitz’s psychedelic-soul-funk-rock music or not, it’s undeniable that he has a penchant for design (who’d have thought?). The South Florida glamour one would expect of Miami or Boca Raton is embodied well in every aspect of the Florida Room, without looking contrived. The bygone era where a touch of class was
de rigueur will be enjoyed by anyone in Miami, who finds themselves in the area of the esteemed Delano. Cheers! –D.C.
